Murrysville, Pennsylvania is a municipality located in Westmoreland County and is located only twenty miles east of the Pittsburgh metro area. It is often referred to as the gateway to Westmoreland County because it is the first area most travelers pass through when leaving Pittsburgh for Westmoreland.

As of the 2000 U.S. census Murrysville had a population of nearly 20,000 people. In addition to Murrysville, the municipality is also made up of the following surrounding towns and villages; Delmont, Export, Newlonsburg, Sardis, and White Valley. The small town of Export is an enclave, being that it is completely surrounded by Murrysville.

Since the early 1930’s, Murrysville has been distinguished by a unique “tree sign”. This arboreal sign spells out the municipality’s name, “Murrysville”. The sign which is located on a large hill and is visible if traveling into the area via U.S. route 22 was constructed by local Boy Scouts during the Great Depression Era.

At one time it held the distinction of being the largest sign of its kind in the world and was even featured in a 1947 showcase of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not”. The nation’s first commercial-scale natural gas well, the Haymaker Gas Well, was also constructed in Murrysville. This well was drilled in 1878 and for quite some time was regarded as the largest natural gas well in the nation.

The school district for the Murrysville area is the Franklin Regional School District. It is a highly acclaimed school district in Pennsylvania and is also a class AAA high-school football powerhouse. Murrysville also boasts very low crime statistics compared to other similarly populated regions throughout the state and the country.

This municipality is also within driving distance to world-class museums and universities. A satellite campus of Penn State University is also nearby for students who wish to pursue their education without attending the main campus at State College - University Park.

Murrysville offers many conveniences that are found in areas two or three times its size. In addition to being a short drive from the Pittsburgh metro area there are also many golf courses, hotels, parks and annual community festivals that are held in the immediate area.

Some of the largest regional employers include Alcoa, Bayer, Calgon Carbon, Del Monte Foods and the H.J. Heinz food company which is famous for their “57 varieties” slogan that refers to the company’s line of table condiments
